Bordi Beach
For those staying in Western suburbs of Andheri, Malad and Borivili, Northern beaches of Maharashtra are God- sent. Bordi which is 180 Km north of Mumbai is an excellent getaway.
Kihim Beach
One of the pleasures of being in Mumbai is that you can take off for for a beach weekend at every whim. Alibaug is a popular getaway and that makes it very crowded especially on weekends. Kihim beach, which is just 9 Kms away from Alibaug, offers a better alternative as it is relatively quiet.
Bhimashanker
A sacred forest with a jyotirlingam temple of Lord Shiva, the forest is almost impenetrable save for a lone track that serves as a nature trail. Famous for its rare flora and fauna, this is the escapist's dream destination. Reasonable accommodation is available at the MTDC lodge. Located 260 km from Mumbai.
Ganapatipule
This small, sedate and unspoiled village offers a pristine beach and lush settings apart from the Ganapati temple. Other places of interest include Malgud village (birthplace of the Marathi poet Keshavoot), the Jaigad fort, and dreamy villages like Pawas and Velneshwar. Located 375 km out of Mumbai, the village has MTDC accommodation.
Karla
The Karla Buddhist caves are almost 2,000 years old and probably have the largest collection of chaityas (halls). The Bhaja and Bedsa caves are also nearby. Lohaghad and Visaput, two 18th century forts, are a few kilometres away, as are hill stations Khandala and Lonavala. Not playing host to hordes of tourists, the place makes for a very pleasant stay. The distance from Mumbai is about 114 km; MTDC accommodation is available.
Bhandardara
Looking for a picturesque picnic spot? Feast your eyes on green forests, a splendid lake, and the highest peak in the Sahyadris. Mount Kalsubai, 1,646 m high, situated on the banks of the Pravara River is an added attraction. As are the Ratangadh Fort and Amriteshwar temple dating back to 1,100 AD. It is located 185 km from Mumbai; MTDC accommodation is available.
Murud-Janjira
This island fortress, once the capital of the Sidis of Janjira, lies 160 km south of Mumbai. There's beautiful architecture, lovely beaches, venerable temples-take your pick. There's an MTDC hotel on the beach, among others
